After my father passed away, I was sitting and journaling, with the weight of leadership heavy on my shoulders. I remember reading Genesis 1:27, that we were made in the image of God. My mind began to think about being a mirror for God, something I had heard countless times.
That's when a still, small whisper entered my soul: "But Tanner, what kind of mirror are you?"
I've been carrying that question ever since, and this season it became the theme of our Vikings Bible studies and chapels: One Perfect Mirror.
"As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man." Proverbs 27:19
It is easy in our world to do the "right thing" without our heart being in it. When Samuel looked at David, the Lord told him that He judges the heart, not the outward appearance. The heart of a man, what is inside you, is a reflection of who you are.
What grabs your heart today?
We were made in God's image to reflect Him. And only one person ever reflected Him perfectly. His name is Jesus. He is the one perfect mirror, and the closer we stay to Him, the more we reflect Him.
When I was journaling, the Lord revealed to me many ways I had failed to reflect Him, and what kind of mirror I really was. More on that later.
It is a biblical promise that if I draw near to Him, He will draw near to me.
Here's what keeps hitting me: God is more interested in who you are becoming than in what you are doing.
A mentor told me that years ago, and I have never forgotten it. It is so easy to get caught up in doing the right thing, or doing big things for the Lord, when He is more interested in WHO we are becoming along the way.
You become like what you behold, and to behold something is to look at it with a sense of awe and wonder. So the question isn't only where you're looking. It's what you're in awe of.
Two questions for your week:
Who or what am I reflecting?
Who am I becoming?
The reality is we are always reflecting something. Every room we walk into, every conversation we have, and every post we make. Who or what are you reflecting?
You are never going to be perfect, but who do you want to become? What needs to change in your habits to make that a reality?
Where is your heart?
