A native of Union, Kentucky, Tanner's football journey was built on out-working the room. Redshirting his freshman year at Minnesota, he stepped into the starting role in 2018 and never looked back. Over a legendary five-year career, he stood as the program's ultimate standard-bearer, starting 47 games and securing a historic 33 victories.
His breakout 2019 season remains one of the most prolific in Big Ten history, where he engineered an 11-win season, an Outback Bowl championship over Auburn, and shattered single-season school records with 3,253 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. Known for unmatched consistency, Tanner concluded his college career as the program's all-time leader in pass efficiency (151.0) and completion percentage (62.2%), earning stints in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings.
